Burbles as a Pretty Princess in Pink

So, I have to put these on here because I thought the were SO cute. This is the outfit that her Great-Gummie got for her on our long trip to Wal-Mart. So cool because it is a dress but then can be used with or without the pants depending on the weather and there is so much room for her to grow. This is great for Wisconsin weather, because (like today) sometimes it is cold (60 degrees this morning) and then hot (82 degrees this afternoon) all in the same day. Some places don't have a 20 degree temperature difference between all the seasons.

Here, some more contortionism by Burbles. When I was pregnant with her, she always curled her butt WAY out and pushed on my ribs. At the same time she threw her head back and pushed forward on my pelvic bone. Talk about uncomfortable. She still does the same thing today when she is laying on the floor or in her bouncy chair. I can't imagine that it is comfortable, but she sure likes it and she really squaks if you try and move her.

Time with my Sisters

Last night, all of us sisters got together. My youngest sister left before we took photos, but the rest of us got to get some photos with us and our kids, so here goes:
Captain and Buka--they were born 13 days apart
Burbles and DeDe--they were born on the same day
Buka, DeDe, and Mommy E
The Gang
Buka helping Captain put on his shoes Ok, so let's try it this way...Maybe I'll just wear them myself...
Daddy B with DeDe and Captain
Mommy B with Baby WDW
Contortionist Burbles
And you would think we never feed the kid
One of Captain's latest words... Starts with the same letter as Frog, but end with the last three of Duck. Please help us to get through this stage without too many people laughing. It only encourages him.

Church Today

Today at church, the Priest talked about materialism and how caught up in buying things people are. I find this myself and he said that he did this as well. We drive past a boat and think... gee, I wish I could have that. Or we look at large houses with elaborate decor and think... gosh, I would love it if my house were that big and I could have that decoration. We all get caught up in this at one time or another, but it is important to remember what we NEED vs. what we WANT and then remember that other people out there may need help getting what they NEED and it is our job to help them.
On Wednesday, the 35W Bridge collapsed in the Twin Cities. What a terrible tragedy. We all hate to see such suffering and death. It hurts us even more when something like this happens so close to home. We must remember to be close to God at all times because the reality is that we never know from one moment to the next what is going to happen. God will not care how many things we have or how many things we have to do. He will care about what we have done for others and what we have done to ready ourselves for what may come at any time.
I don't mean to harp. I know that I need to work on this myself. I want to get this or that for the kids or I think I need a new digital camera because mine isn't as nice as my mother-in-law's, but really, as long as I can take photos with the camera I have, there is no need for me to buy a new one. I need to remember to say my prayers. I say prayers with the kids every day, but a lot of times, I don't say my own. And mostly, I need to remember to thank God for what he has provided for me and my family and those I love. And I need to remember to tell those I love that I love them.

Our Cali Trip Day 3

The third day we were in Cali, we went to church with a neighbor of Gummie and Guppy's. She is such a sweet lady and is very kind hearted. She is well known at the church and introduced us to the Priest and a few other people. After church, a close friend from Cornell College came to Gummie and Guppy's house. We all visited for a while and then hit the road.

We drove to Palm Springs and went on the Palm Springs Ariel Tramway. Captain was none too thrilled to be on this thing that dipped and swayed after each pole, but once we got to the top, he was running free. We ate lunch at the top and walked around and saw the view, but didn't take any photos as we were dealing with the kids and all their stuff. It started raining after we started eating lunch outside, so we moved inside, then Burbles needed to eat, then she wanted to lay out on the table with nothing and noone touching her. My friend and I got a lot of good visiting in and we are really excited that she will be flying back to Wisconsin/Minnesota at the end of August. The weather at the top was wonderful--a whole 20 degrees cooler than in the desert, and we spent almost 2 hours at the top. Had the kids been a little older, we would have considered walking on some of the closer trails, but as it was, we stayed close to the main building.

After the Tram, we drove back to Gummie and Guppy's house. My Uncle R and Aunt K were there and we visited with them for a while and then we all went out to eat. That night after my Aunt and Uncle left, we visited with my college friend some more and finally got to sleep at about midnight. Burbles was up again throughout the night, and once again, I didn't get much sleep.

Our Cali Trip Day 2

Day two was a day filled with Captain Destructo antics... at least the first part of the day. Gummie and Guppy don't wake up until later in the day, but were awakened when we just couldn't keep the kids in our bedroom any longer. We visited with them for a while and Captain explored EVERYTHING. We tried to help keep him away from stuff he couldn't have. He got just as frustrated as we did with being told No, no, no, no. Less than five minutes after Gummie said that he wouldn't be able to break anything in the house, he pulled a hurricane lamp with a painted glass shade off of its perch on a table in the living room. We didn't figure that he would be able to reach the lamp, but it escaped our minds that he could reach the doily that was under the lamp. We were terribly sorry that that happened, but that kind of set the tone around the house. Gummie never baby-proofed her house when her kids were growing up, but Captain is used to a house where everything that is left out or that can be opened or moved around is available for him to play with. Not so much at the Great-Grandparent's house. We chased him around until we just couldn't take it anymore and then suggested that we go find something to do... like a park or even the Wal-Mart. We ended up going to Idyllwild which is a true artist community in the mountains in Southern California.
When I say in the mountains, I mean in the mountains. Poor Fundi was pretty green when we finally reached the town. We had intended on getting some lunch up there and not spending all that much time in the galleries because Galleries+Kids=Expensive Broken Stuff but when we got there, Fundi was not interested in eating at all, but because I had driven and was not sick at all, I was starving. We ended up walking around for a while and then going to eat at a small town cafe. The food was really good and they boasted that if there was something you were craving, just ask, and they would see what they could do for you. Fundi got a soup, I got chicken strips and fries and Captain got milk. It was still pretty warm 5280 feet up, but it was cooler than it had been in the desert. After lunch, we walked around and found a gallery that we really like the work in. We bought three pieces of art and arranged for them to be shipped to us. (We are really into art and particularly like to have art in our home that people we know have made or purchase art from places that we visit and are able to actually talk with the artists.)
About then was time to head back down the mountain. The same 18 miles that allowed us to climb the 3500 feet from the desert allowed us to descend as well. Now, this road was a little over a car and a half wide and most of it was carved through large boulders or close to the edges of steep drop-offs. The views were amazing, but getting there wasn't the easiest thing in the world.

After slowly wiggling our way back down the mountain (I'm not as familiar with the road as others, obviously, and I was passed at least 50 times on the way down.) we went out to Chinese food with Gummie and Guppy. The food was very tasty and the visiting was very nice. I even got to attempt Spanish conversation with a man who was sitting at a table across from us with two young children. (I am one of those people who enjoy talking to other people with kids, even if I don't know them at all.) Captain enjoyed the food and especially liked the vanilla pudding (this was a first).

Through it all, Burbles was a good spectator. She observed and observed some more. She also started being stranger wary that day and has continued crying if anyone other than mom holds her pretty much since we arrived in California.

That night was bath night, and the following photos are of Gummie helping with Captain's bath. I think that it was after 9pm when the baths began, which means that it was 11pm our time, but at that point, I think both kids were running pretty well on Cali time. Meals and naps and bed-time all fell into place and they seemed to adjust to the time change better than Fundi and I.

One of those quizes...

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANY ONE?

I couldn't tell you for sure.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

There was just something about the Shamu show at Sea World that got me. I guess today I was listening to the Garth Brooks Song "We Shall Be Free" and I got choked up because I want my kids to live in a world like that...

3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?

Mostly. I guess it depends on if I have a kid hanging on my arm or not and if I am in a hurry or not.

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?

Turkey--shaved, smoked mesquite

5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?

Yes. Two... if you were paying attention you would know that already though.

6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOURSELF?

I would think so.

7. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?

Too much, probably, but that is just my personality.

8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?

Yes.

9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?

I used to think that I would, but now that I have kids I don't think so.

10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?

I like Kashi right now. Even though it is twigs and things cereal. I also love all of the Malt-O-Meal cheepie cereals with all the extra sugar.

11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?

No. If I can manage time to put on shoes with shoe strings I don't have the time to tie them so I slip them on and off. I am personally a big fan of flip-flops unless Fundi says that it is too cold/rainy/snowy to wear them.

12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?

I try to be. Emotionally I get teary a little to often.

13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?

White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle in the Oval container

14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?

Their attitude based on their facial expressions. Smile :)

15. RED OR PINK?

I like pink. All shades and especially like my baby pink sweatshirt and baby pink shoes.

16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF?

30. FAVORITE FOOD?

Hmm... I enjoy Japanese food at those places where the cook the food in front of you. I also really like Chinese food, especially from that place across the River. They have the BEST crab rangoons.

31. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?

Nothing can compare to a happy ending. I used to like scary movies, but I can't even watch previews anymore without getting creeped out.

32. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"

33. WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING?

Peach with off white stripes.

34. SUMMER OR WINTER?

I don't know. I really don't like the extremes we experience here in Wisconsin, but if I had to choose, I guess it would be winter. 39. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW?

Book? What's that? I haven't read a whole book for a couple of months, but I read magazine after magazine after magazine. The short articles are enough to keep my brain active but short enough that I don't forget what is going on if my kids interrupt me while I'm reading them. I have a gigantic list of books that I need to start working on.

40. WHAT IS ON YOUR MOUSE PAD?

Just the mouse on my computer right now. (Laptop)

41. WHAT DID YOU WATCH ON T.V. LAST NIGHT?

TV? Last night? Nothing. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays I watch Big Brother though. That is the only real TV that I get to watch lately.

47. WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO READING?

Everyone's!

Our Cali Trip Day 1

On our first day of our vaca we traveled to the airport early hoping to hop on an earlier flight. We check in however, and found out that standby was not an option for the earlier flight. We were subjected to flying at the later time and had assigned seats that were not together. We parked at EZ Air Park and they came and picked us and all of our stuff up at our van where we parked and they delivered us to the front door of the Northwest Airlines Counter. We checked in (grumpy attendant) and checked four bags (our limit was 6 because we had purchased a seat for Captain as well). We carried Captain's carseat and pushed the stroller with the kids in it. We also took a backpack as our diaper bag/carry-on.
We had breakfast and a light lunch at the McDonald's in the airport and then proceeded to our gate. There was a flight that got delayed and then had to use our gate, so our gate was changed twice and we moved the kids and ourselves and our stuff to each gate like cattle being herded. When we finally arrived at the appropriate gate, I asked the agent at the counter about "wish-list seating" and they said that we should be able to ask the people that were sitting near us about changing seats with us for sanity reasons. They said that most people are happy to help out parents that are traveling with young children ("Friendly Skies" and all...). We attempted to get to the skywalk when our rows were called, but there were too many people standing right in the path and we ended up boarding when everyone else did.... lucky us.
We made our way to the last row of the plane (where they put people with young kids) and started installing the carseat. Not two seconds later, some jerk comes up and says that I am standing where he is supposed to be sitting. I ask if he would be willing to switch seats with me. Only if I had an aisle seat (I had a middle seat)... NO LUCK. He asked the flight attendant to be reassigned a seat. She informed him that the plane was full and that if someone didn't check in, he would be offered their seat. While I was installing the seat, a nice lady who was supposed to be sitting next to me (she had the window seat) was holding Burbles. Fundi was situating the bag and holding Captain. Good Grief. Captain's chair was finally in (in the middle seat on the other row. Fundi climbed over it to his window seat and Oscar (the grouch that was mean to us) was huffing and puffing about his assigned seat near the bathrooms right behind us. With Captain secured, Burbles and I attempted to get situated. I was seated and had all the bottles and sippy cups and was feeding Burbles when Captain started in that he wanted "Milk". We asked Oscar to pass the milk over to Fundi. He did so with great disgust and glared at us and the flight attendants about his assigned seat. Finally, the guy who was to sit next to me in the aisle seat arrived. He was late, close to hyperventilation, and a super-geek (he studied chemistry and formulas and those diagrams of elements and matter composition through the whole four hour flight). He sat down and we presented him with the Opportunity to sit in the middle seat so that Oscar could sit in the aisle seat and our family could be together. He was none too happy about that and chose to keep his assigned seating. Captain then needed a snack of some sort, so I asked Super-Geek to pass the snack to Oscar and then to Captain. Again, glares and stares.... finally all of the boarding was complete and the flight attendant let Oscar know that there was a seat open somewhere toward the front of the plane. At that point, I believed they informed him of the "children in back" policy on airplanes and that he should avoid these seats if he didn't like children. I joked with him that we were trying to convert him. He said "To want kids? Humpf..." and walked off. I quickly got up and asked Super-Geek to do the same so that I was able to sit with my family. He did so, but almost became out of breath again. Then we flew.
Captain had been so excited about the planes that were sitting at the airport. He had looked and looked. As soon as we started moving he started fussing becuase he was tired. Burbles happily nibbled on her bottle during takeoff and didn't act like anything was happening. We finally got in the air and were situated and Captain and Burbles were sleeping, and both Fundi and I were trying to sleep. They came around and asked if we wanted to buy snacks ($5 for a box, $2 for Pringles or Trail Mix) and then they came around with drinks. Captain woke up about halfway through the flight and we managed to keep him occupied. (Hey E, we got a Magna-Doodle for him and it was useful, but he didn't draw on it... it had a dish on the back that we used for putting his fruit puffs in so they didn't go all over.)
Everything else was pretty uneventful, as far as the flight went. We got our luggage and put it on one of those handy dandy luggage carts and went to find our rental car shuttle. We got on and off the shuttle with lots of help from the driver who was super-nice. I stood in line and waited to get our car while Fundi kept the kids occupied outside. Captain at that point was able to see planes pass closely overhead and was totally excited by this.
We got a Dodge Charger (Black, unfortunately) and were on our way (but not before installing two carseats and attempting to cram in all of our luggage into the trunk). And I was driving. We got out of the dealership, left on a one way street with an idea of where we were going when I noticed a big chip in the windshield. So, we had to make our way back to the dealership on a series of one ways in San Diego to let the know that there was a chip in our window. Then we also asked directions. They told us that to get to Balboa park, we would need to go straight on the road we had just turned around on. We made it back to that road and proceeded to the park. We were headed to the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Natural History Museum. We got there without trouble, but then had to find the place where we were supposed to be. We parked and waited for a while for a trolley, but then decided that it was getting late and that we should get going to the high desert town that my grandparents live in.
We got on 163 and then merged with 15N all while going less than 10 MPH. After about an hour of this, we decided that we didn't want to listen to the kids screaming in the backseat anymore and that we would be better off getting something to eat and then trying to hit the road again. Food was what we all needed and when we got back on the road after eating at Chili's we were all in a better mood and the traffic was moving much more quickly.
We got to Gummie and Guppy's house at a little after 8pm (it was 10pm our time) and the kids were ready for bed, so we settled them in and then we all visited for a while. I asked if we could go to the Wal-Mart so that I could get formula and diapers and a few things (like a blanket for Burbles because hers was left on the airplane in our rush to get off). Fundi stayed home with the sleeping kids and we went off for a quick trip to Wal-Mart that turned into a two hour adventure with my Grandparents. We got what we needed and then some... (good thing I packed an extra bag in our luggage to bring back the stuff we aquired in Cali.) We got back to their house and then visited some more (mostly about the fact that it had taken us so long and that Fundi had been really worried, especially when he had heard sirens and a helicopter) and then finally got to bed about 2am (4am our time).
Burbles woke up at 3am and I was in the chair with her for the rest of the night. She was hot and uncomfortable and not in her own element and we didn't have a blanket to swaddle her in (it was too hot to anyway) and she kept flailing around and waking herself up. Captain woke up at 5am (7am our time) and was up for the day, which meant that we were too.

Baby WDW

Hello all, my sister had her baby... (she came over and got my Rasperry Leaf Tea that put me into labor with Burbles the day that she went into labor) She had a little boy. 7lbs 15oz, 20 inches, 9:31am on Aug 1st, 2007 delivered by C-section (unplanned). Baby and mommy are doing fine and Daddy is proud as a peacock. Here are some photos that I took when we visited, but to see the baby photo, visit Luther Hospital Nursery Website a few days after they are released from the hospital (by Tuesday or Wednesday), I think that they will release the photo to be put on that page.

I know it has been forever...

I know it has taken me a long time to get back on here, but I hope someone is still reading...
We returned from Cali about a week ago and we got the computer back on Wednesday. It is Friday, yes, but I have been busy working on stuff around the house and other fun things like visiting a new baby nephew (more on that later).
Now for a funny story. This morning at 4am Burbles squaked and I went to get her, but before that I went to the bathroom and got her bottle. I heard something on the deck walking back and forth like someone walking with a rolling suitcase across the deck. Being a little disoriented because of the time of day and a little worried that it was someone and not something, I woke Fundi up. (Only he really was already up and was going to be getting out of bed for work soon anyway.) I told him what I had heard and that I wanted to go check it out with him. So, we creeped past the baby room (by then Burbles had fallen back to sleep) and out to the kitchen. We listened and we could still hear it, so to surprise it we turned on the lights and unlocked the door and looked outside. There was nothing on the deck, but whatever it was was in the soffet and came right to where the light was and then followed us the length of the deck as we walked toward the garage to see if the thing was on the roof or in the gutter... nope, it was in the soffet, like I said before. We don't know what it was. It wasn't just a little mouse though, skittering around. It was definately big and we could hear it in our room which is on the opposite side of the house from where the soffet is. AHHH! I hope it doesn't come back and I hope that it can get out. I don't want something to die up there and then have to smell it all the time and figure out how we are going to get it out. Yuck! And it freaked me out and I don't want to have to listen to it walking back and forth all night ever again. Creepy!
Anyhow, enough of that... good news is that the kids continued to sleep through the whole fiasco, so that was good.

Cali

Hi all, we are here in California. We have been staying with my grandparents in a high desert town and today we are leaving to go to the coast again. It is hot here. The kids are adjusting great. Captain has been Captain... more on that later. Just a little message to let you all know that we made it OK and I'll be writing more soon.

And we're off...

Tomorrow I forfeit my computer to the people at Best Buy for repairs. I figured that since we will be gone for a week of that time and then busy for the following two weeks, the three week separation from our computer will not be as terrible as it could be. I am sure that there will be lots of photos for everyone to see when we return and I'm sure there will be stories to tell... if I have time to tell them. Hopefully everyone will take care while we are off.
